Digitalisation will have an impact on the future working environment. To which extent substitution of occupation by computer-controlled machines takes place, depends on the type of occupation. The findings show that unskilled/semi-skilled and specialist occupations reveal substitution potentials with approximately 45 per cent. In 2013 low-skilled workers accounted for 23 per cent of the German workforce and is thus clearly an integral component of modern industrial production. The automation and digitalisation of the entire world of work threaten low-skilled work, probably leaving unskilled and semi-skilled workers unemployed. Nevertheless, the human aspect of experience cannot be substituted. This study explains why low-skilled work will still have a continuous relevance within the “Industry 4.0” framework.
